I'm a Sagittarius, a fire sign. So maybe it makes sense that when I first tried wood burning in 2022, something in me finally felt free. I'd tried other crafts before, but this one felt like coming home to myself. My curiosity, my hunger to keep learning and mastering this craft, has only grown since.

MaterFocus draws from two Latin roots: materia, the substance from which things are made, tracing back to mater, mother. Not as a domestic title, but as the origin of all things: the universe that births galaxies, the earth that cradles life. Mother as origin. Mother as creation itself. And focus, the hearth, the fire, the warmth we return to. That campfire where we share our stories and keep them in our hearts.

These two words tell my story: how something small can catch, and keep burning. How making these pieces has become its own kind of gift, to the people I love, and to myself.

Wood is alive before it ever meets fire. Working with wood is a way of returning to our roots, literally and in spirit. Every burn mark is not merely decoration. It's a dialogue between the artist, the fire, and the living grain of the wood, where natural material is transformed through patience, artistry, and intention.
